RN Patient Advocate Testimonials

Ms. Mercereau referred a patient to me for evaluation and treatment – a very complicated history, with symptoms in multiple organ systems, and very young, only in her 30s. Allopathic medical treatments had her on about 6 different pharmaceutical medications for “disease management”, and the patient was not improving on any of the treatments. Because of the complexity of the case, the patient had multiple metabolic tests, as well as multiple sessions of allergy testing, heavy metals evaluation, and was advised to make huge changes in her nutritional habits. Needless to say, the results all became jumbled I her head. She required several sessions for explanation of results, to help her understand her therapies and how to accomplish them. I am very good at explaining something once. By the time the explanation is made for the third or 4th time, I am less good. Karen understood the explanation the first time, and has the patience to continue to explain things to the patient and family, until they were comfortable with their understanding. Ms Mercereau does indeed serve as a true patient advocate, and she has been a distinct pleasure to work with. Our mutual patient’s care has been significantly enhanced by Ms. Mercereau’s involvement. Please feel free to call if there are any questions. I have the highest regard and respect for Ms. Mercereau and recommend her services highly.

I want to thank you for all your assistance in finding an alternative medicine Dr. for me. Your help in directing me to a physician with the critical knowledge of my compounded medical problems was very helpful. Your extraordinary help in dealing with my health issues and helping to improve my quality of life by directing me to the proper channels of care has made a tremendous difference in coping with Parkinson's Disease and other health issues. Having my family and friends comment how much better I look and that I have my sparkle in my eyes back as well as me walking better is very rewarding to me. I am forever grateful for your assistance.

For the past several years I have heard and witnessed the negative experiences my friends and relatives have had during and after hospital stays. In July 2009 I was told that I had an aneurysm in my aorta that needed repairing. My best friend told me about Karen Mercereau an R. N. that specialized as a "Patient's Advocate" I met with her and immediately retained her to represent me. Before, during and after the procedure she did such an outstanding job of representing me that I will never enter a hospital again without having her, her experience and knowledge beside me. She got along famously with the Doctor's and Nurses because she knows what she is talking about.

Life changed for my family the day we learned that Mom had a double brain aneurysm, one of which had burst and she lay completely unconscious. Here was a vibrant, healthy 69-year-old woman, the “glue” of our family, and her fate truly laid in our hands. After a 44 day period in the hospital, Mom had undergone a craniotomy, battled pneumonia, a minor heart attack, had 2 feeding tubes inserted into her abdomen, a blood infection, and multiple blood transfusions. Upon release and transfer to a local rehabilitative center close to home, we were given the unkind news that Mom was close to “plateauing” and nothing more could be done to help her. Here she was totally helpless, and that was it? Completely frustrated, a friend told me about patient advocates that hospitals use to help patients and their families understand patient’s rights and choices available in the medical field. I checked it out on the Internet and the very first one I came across was RN Patient Advocates, what better than a professional (RN) working in the patient advocacy field! Upon reading her website and talking to Karen Mercereau, I was completely sold that this was the type of help we needed for Mom. Karen’s expertise and professionalism had surpassed all that was told to us and she had my trust that she was going to help Mom come back to us. Two years later, Karen has become an integral part in our family. She has developed a team of professionals who have become part of our family as well. Under Karen’s direction, they understand that they are here to “help Mom learn how to help herself,” and to help Mom reclaim her life. The team consists of a neurologist, an internal medicine doctor, physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist (although ST, and OT have done a wonderful job, their services are no longer needed as Mom continues to bypass all of our expectations), a personal trainer, a massage therapist, an acupuncturist, a psychologist, a cognitive rehabilitative specialist, and 3 companions/ aides. Karen has led and continues to show superb direction and leadership in staying ahead of Mom’s progress and care. She plays many roles as a Nurse Advocate such as first and foremost top patient care, as well as staying current in the integrative world of medicine and therapies, interviewing team members, and as a friend who listens as well as a shoulder to cry upon. She truly cares and loves her job as she is helping not only Mom but my family as well. Without her, things would have been a lot different. Today, because of Karen Mercereau, Mom IS “back,” fully aware, cares for all her personal hygiene, able to once again engage in all of her social activities, enjoys good meals, and continues to amaze us all. She works hard and continues to do so, with her latest goal of being able to walk freely again (currently she is in a wheelchair, and walking much of the time with a walker). And that is still not it- Mom is determined to one day become totally and completely independent! I like to call Karen our “God-send.” She helped to bring Mom back to us and for that we are eternally grateful.
